Caroline Bartlett Crane Collection, Everyman’s House

A national competition winner for an efficient home design for the common man in the 1920s.

This digitized subcollection is an interesting mix of documents and images about the winning design conceived and built in Kalamazoo by Caroline Bartlett Crane, a prominent social activist and minister in Kalamazoo’s early history. Includes material about housing in her 1920s book, Everyman’s House, photographs and design plans for the house, which was a winner of Herbert Hoover’s "Better Homes of America" campaign.

Over 50 items are preserved as digital objects in a searchable collection. See a selection of the collection. Also available in the 'Making of Modern Michigan' history project.
